Hunting for a Piece of New York
Having lived in New York City for over five years, apartment hunting, while not a new concept to me is just as challenging and intimidating no matter how many times I’ve lived through it. The anxiety of finding that perfect place in a tight time frame for the right budget and with all of my desired amenities is enough to make my palms sweat and head swell. So this spring as my lease was coming to an end and I decided it was time to move on again, I realized much like creating a strategic PR campaign, I needed a sound battle plan.
First things first, I sat down and set some goals and parameters for myself along with a budget and strict timeline. With warm weather looming and winter deals and specials melting away along with the season, it was critical that I get out ahead of the curve to secure a place before May hit. With these elements in place it was time to check out the rental market and thoroughly research the landscape for deals, competitive pricing and vital resources that would become my go-to over the month. That way when brokers would try to coax me into a deal with the threat that “it was the best place I would possibly find” I would know otherwise.
It was crucial that I have a solid team of experts in place to steer me in the right direction from a trusted broker that would give it to me straight to friends who have just been through the ordeal. Finally, I had to move fast and outsmart the competition. You have to know what you want – the more specific the better off you are. Traveling with all of my necessary paper work in-hand I could sign an application before the next guy could even step foot in the place.
With April’s arrival, I’m happy to report that I’ve found my perfect home sweet home. As I look back on the month I make a promise to myself that I’ll never move again or at least until the two year itch to vacate strikes again!
